Attualmente è coordinato dal Conservatorio di Musica di Parma. La tecnica utilizzata per ricreare il timbro degli strumenti musicali si chiama "sintesi per modelli fisici" (physical modeling synthesis) ed è basata sulla simulazione del comportamento fisico dello strumento attraverso equazioni matematiche ed algoritmi che ne descrivono la struttura e le reazioni agli stimoli (soffio, percussione, pizzico, sfregamento). Le informazioni di base sono tipicamente resti archeologici, descrizioni prese dalla letteratura, campioni di materiali, raffigurazioni pittoriche che forniscono preziosi ragguagli circa i materiali, le forme e le tecniche musicali utilizzate per produrre il suono.\n\nDal punto di vista computazionale, il progetto ASTRA si avvale della tecnologia più avanzata al momento per il calcolo distribuito su scala internazionale, il "Grid computing", ovvero il calcolo distribuito su larga scala. La computazione è effettuata sulla rete GÉANT2 (la rete paneuropea per la ricerca e la formazione) e su EUMEDCONNECT2 (la dorsale per la ricerca e la formazione che lega i paesi del basso mediterraneo). Grazie alle infrastrutture di calcolo distribuite messe a disposizione dal progetto INFN GILDA e dal progetto EUMEDGRID, co-finanziato dalla Comunità Europea nell'ambito del 6 Programma Quadro, ASTRA oggi riesce a far rivivere le emozioni dei suoni antichi, e consentire a musicisti di utilizzare questi suoni durante i concerti come quello a cui assisterete. Musiche di Dall'Apra, Anonimi napoletani, Caccini, Bassani, Purcell, Haendel, Vivaldi, Provenzale.\nIl concerto è gratuito ma poichè i posti in sala sono 280 è obbligatoria la prenotazione.\n\nThe concert "Musica @ Fisica", organized by the Catania Division of the Italian National Institute of Nuclear Physics, is an important event which aims at presenting the main achievements of the ASTRA (Ancient instrument Sound/Timbre Reconstruction Application) project to the Cultural Heritage community and to the General Public. \nThe overall goal of this project, coordinated by the Conservatory of Music of Parma in close synergy with the Conservatory of Music of Salerno, the INFN of Catania and other partners, is to take advantages of the most sophisticated physical modeling synthesis to create a computing models of ancient instruments (not existing anymore) and reconstruct their sounds simulating the response of these models when played. The computing model will be created starting form the archaeological findings for the given ancient instrument such as: fragments from excavations, written descriptions, pictures on ancient urns and so on. \n\nThe computing model reconstructed by means of the Physical Modeling Synthesis will be then simulated as a mechanical system in order to produce as result the sound of the instrument. From a computational point of view the ASTRA project uses the GRID technology and the possibility to access to computational resources for e-Science linked by high-speed \nnetworks such as GÉANT2 in Europe and EUMEDCONNECT2 in the Mediterranean region. In particular, thanks to the distributed computational resources exposed by GRID Infrastructures such us the INFN GILDA project (the Grid INFN virtual Laboratory for Dissemination Activities) and the EUMEDGRID project, co-founded by the EU in the 6th. Framework Programme, today ASTRA can generate digital sound libraries and share all these data with researchers, musicians, historians and museums. The digital sound libraries obtained from the grid, for instance, can be used by musicians to perform live concerts.
